Undeclared Design Option
Do you know that you are creative, but you’re not sure which design program most appeals to you or what best suits your unique talents? The College of Design at Iowa State University is the perfect place for to discover your calling.
Iowa State’s College of Design is one of the most comprehensive design institutions in the nation where you can find a mix of disciplines housed in the same college, under the same roof. So even if you’re undecided right now, you can find something that fits your interests here. That’s where the Undeclared Design Program comes in – it’s perfect for students who, just like you, need some time to explore design before committing to a program.
Your first year, undeclared
Entering the College of Design undeclared does not need to affect your graduation date. How does that work? The Core Design Program.
Most students entering the College of Design are required to enroll in the first-year Core Design Program, which provides a common set of foundational classes that exposes students to all nine majors within the College of Design, preparing you for any of our degree programs. At the end of your first year, you can apply to any or all of the college’s professional degree programs.
You can also get engaged with student organizations, participate in academic advising, and attend a variety of events held by each department throughout your journey toward choosing a major. Every student experience is designed to help you find, explore, and grow within the areas of design that most inspire you!
Core Design Program
The undergraduate curricula in design are divided into two phases: the Core Design Program and the professional or general degree program. Classes in the Core create a shared experience and community that exposes students to all nine majors within the College of Design.
Success in Design
Students graduate career-ready with internships, capstone projects, professional practice and portfolio classes integrated into the Design programs, and support from the Design Career Services Office. The college also hosts an annual Design Career Fair focused only on design majors. It attracts more than 125 firms recruiting for jobs and internships, with College of Design alumni making up more than half of the recruiters in attendance.
A Cyclone in the Making
Find your place at Iowa State University’s College of Design, where we like to ask questions, poke and prod, create something new, and make a difference through design.
