Connecting computation developments and construction challenges

The Iowa State University Computation and Construction Lab (CCL) is an initiative of the Department of Architecture. Through coursework, research, publications, and exhibitions, the CCL works to connect developments in computation with challenges in construction.

As a laboratory operating at a land-grant institution, the CCL works to share knowledge beyond campus borders by leveraging design and construction as tools of public engagement with nonprofit organizations and communities across Iowa. A key principle of this work is expanding access to and knowledge about technology in architecture, specifically creating opportunities for students to learn and create with technology.

About the CCL

The Computation and Construction Lab is located in room 1055 of the Iowa State University Communications Building. Hours vary and access is limited to approved coursework.

The CCL houses a variety of architectural hardware, software, and workflows, including CNC fabrication equipment, plastic and clay 3D printers, hand tools, power tools, and robotics.

As part of a land-grant institution, the CCL shares knowledge beyond campus borders by leveraging design and construction as tools of public engagement with nonprofits and small towns in Iowa. A primary tenet of this work is the democratization of access to and knowledge about technology in architecture, specifically creating opportunities for our students to learn and create with technology.

Associated facilities

The CCL features two associated facilities – a fabrication shop and robotics lab – offering students different opportunities within the CCL’s research and educational mission.

  • Model Making Space

    Architecture Fabrication Shop

The Architecture Fabrication Shop is an affiliated facility of the CCL that is typically available for student use on a first-come, first-served basis, free for all Iowa State architecture students during scheduled hours.

The Architecture Fabrication Shop is located in the Iowa State University Communications Building, room 1125.
