The Design Closet is one way the College of Design is working to mitigate financial barriers to being a design student and reduce and reuse materials within the college. Through generous donations of funds and materials from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the college, it provides new and gently used materials to students with financial need in the college to use for their coursework while also benefiting the environment.
The Design Closet is supported by the Alan E. Krysan and Terri M. Krysan Design Closet Endowment and is managed by the Multicultural Student Success Office as part of the College of Design’s commitment to supporting and promoting inclusion and belonging for all students to thrive. With funds from the endowment and other donations, the MSS Office is also able to partner with the Iowa State University Book Store to provide free and reduced-cost supply kits to students in the first-year design and drawing studios. Students throughout the college are invited to donate supplies and materials they no longer need for distribution to peers, and encouraged to share items left over from projects rather than discard them.
Request materials from the Design Closet
Current students: Fill out and submit the form below to request materials from the Design Closet. After we have reviewed your request and gathered the materials, you will receive an email letting you know what items are available and instructions to pick them up.
Requests should be fulfilled within 48 hours on weekdays if materials are available. You can pick up your materials from the Design Store on the second floor of College of Design during store hours. Bring your student ID to pick up your requested materials. Items designated for return should be brought back to 205 Design two weeks from pick up.
- Some specified materials can also be found in the ReUse lockers (9-18) located on the ground floor of the King Pavilion. Each station has a specified material that can be reused. Please be mindful to take what you need, when you need it, and not use the lockers to store materials.
Donate to the Design Closet
At the end of each semester, collections bins are placed on the ground floor, second floor, and fourth floor of the College of Design. Additionally, students no longer using their locker can request a Design Closet donation magnet from firstname.lastname@example.org to donate all materials remaining in their locker to the closet.
To donate materials at different times of the year, contact email@example.com.
Specified materials can also be donated at anytime to the ReUse lockers located on the ground floor of the King Pavilion, lockers 9-18. Please be sure the condition and amount of material is actually reusable for another person.
The Design Closet also accepts cash and in-kind donations year round.
