AMES, Iowa — Jenny Schuetz, a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, will speak about creating equitable housing policies in a public lecture at Iowa State University.

Schuetz will present “How to Repair America’s Broken Housing Systems,” which is the subtitle of her 2022 book Fixer-Upper, at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in room 0022 Sukup Hall.

Her free talk will explore the book’s themes, assessing how the broad set of local, state and national housing policies affect people and communities and how practical policy changes can make stable, decent-quality housing more available and affordable for all Americans in all communities.

Schuetz’s presentation is supported by the Polk County Housing Trust Fund (PCHTF) and the Gordon Family Endowment in the ISU Department of Community and Regional Planning, the College of Design, ISU Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development and the master of real estate development program.

She will deliver the keynote address for the PCHTF Housing Matters Symposium in Des Moines on Friday, April 26.

About the speaker

Schuetz is a Senior Fellow at Brookings Metro, where her research focuses on urban economics and housing policy, particularly how government policies impact housing affordability and economic opportunity. She has written extensively for academic and public audiences. Fixer-Upper has received coverage on Marketplace, The Ezra Klein Show, Slate and Bloomberg CityLab.

Before joining Brookings, Schuetz served as a principal economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. She was also an assistant professor at the University of Southern California and a postdoctoral fellow at NYU Furman. She is a nonresident senior fellow at George Washington University’s Center for Washington Area Studies and teaches in Georgetown’s urban planning program.

Schuetz earned a PhD in public policy from Harvard University, a master’s in city planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a BA with highest distinction in economics and political and social thought from the University of Virginia.
