AMES, Iowa — Ian Munding, from Lafayette, Colorado, will represent the Iowa State University College of Design as its student marshal at the university’s Undergraduate Fall 2023 Commencement Ceremony Saturday, Dec. 16, at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

Munding will graduate summa cum laude with a bachelor of industrial design. His faculty escort will be Matthew Obbink, associate teaching professor of industrial design.

Munding was a member of the Dean’s List and the top 2 percent of his class every semester, and he received the four-year Exploration Award and Journey Award scholarships from Iowa State.

He served as a peer mentor for the College of Design’s Design Studies 102 studio for one semester and as captain of the varsity Ultimate Frisbee team for two years. He was also a member of the Industrial Designers Society of America Iowa State Chapter and the ISU Ski and Snowboard Club.

Munding completed product design summer internships with HIMALI in Boulder, Colorado, in 2022, and Trango in Lafayette in 2023.

He chose Obbink to be his faculty escort for commencement because “he has always gone out of his way to provide not only me but all his students with anything they might need to succeed in industrial design,” Munding said.

After graduation, he will take time off to road trip around the western United States before seeking a position as a product designer in the outdoor industry.

Munding is a 2019 graduate of Centaurus High School and the son of Kurt and Mary Pat Munding of Lafayette. His sister, Amalia Munding, received a bachelor of fine arts in interior design from Iowa State in 2021.
