AMES, Iowa — Hoàng Trần, AIA, a project architect and project manager for INVISION Architecture in Des Moines, is a recipient of the 2023 Outstanding Young Professional Award presented by the Iowa State University the College of Design.

Established in 2020, the award recognizes College of Design alumni who received their most recent degree from Iowa State  within the past 10 years and have excelled in their professions early in their careers.

Trần, from Des Moines, received a bachelor of architecture from ISU in 2013. He will be honored during Homecoming at the ISU Alumni Association’s 92nd Honors and Awards Ceremony at 1:30 p.m. CT Friday, Nov. 3, at Stephens Auditorium in Ames and streamed live online. A dessert reception will follow. Both the ceremony and reception are free and open to the public.

A first-generation American and first-generation college graduate, Trần has demonstrated remarkable talent, leadership and dedication to architecture through his professional and volunteer efforts. In his role at INVISION Architecture, Trần leads his colleagues in multiple sectors, primarily higher education and industry.

In 2020, Trần was part of the team that renovated the Hubbell Dining Hall at Drake University. He is now overseeing the renovation of the second and third floors of the Iowa State University Memorial Union — about 19,000 square feet of space. Both projects aim to reimagine lounging and gathering spaces for students while respecting each building’s unique architecture.

Other projects in his portfolio include the Land O’ Lakes Center for Excellence at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis; the Fitness Center and Fieldhouse at Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota; the Trojan Fitness Center at Troy University in Troy, Alabama; and the Race Riot Memorial in Springfield, Illinois.

Trần has also pioneered efforts to improve the firm’s internal automation processes for building information models (BIM). His new methods help identify opportunities to improve and automate repetitive documentation tasks, allowing his colleagues to work more efficiently.

Prior to joining INVISION in July 2019, Trần was an intern architect at StruXture Architects in Waterloo and RDG Planning & Design in Des Moines.

Trần serves on the board of directors of the American Institute of Architects Iowa chapter and is the board liaison for the AIA Iowa Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and the Iowa Women in Architecture board. In 2022, he co-chaired the AIA Iowa Annual Convention Committee. He has served on the AIA Iowa Public Relations Committee and co-chaired the AIA Iowa Emerging Professionals Committee.

Trần has also served as a guest panelist for the architecture professional practice course at Iowa State Aand as a volunteer with the Central Iowa Architecture Construction Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program, Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa and ArtForce Iowa.
