AMES, Iowa — Zoey Lazere of Ames will represent the Iowa State University College of Design as its student marshal at the university’s virtual commencement ceremony Saturday, May 9. Her faculty escort will be Austin Stewart, associate professor of art and visual culture.

A member of the Dean’s List and top 2 percent of her class every semester at Iowa State, Lazere will graduate summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts in art and design and minors in digital media and performing arts. She was a member of the Honors Program and received the Rome and International Study Scholarship to study abroad with the College of Design Rome Program in fall 2018.

Lazere was active in ISU Theatre and Performing Arts; she served as a stage manager for productions including “Climate Change Theatre Action: Lighting the Way” and “Creative Company for Iowa Odyssey (Or How We Got to Here)” in 2019 and as assistant puppet designer for “Iphigenia” and set designer for “This Is Our Youth” in 2018.

Lazere was a supervisor for the Memorial Union Workspace, a peer wellness educator for ISU Student Wellness, a props designer and workshop instructor for Story Theater Company and a design mentor for the company’s production of “Trifles” and “How the Vote Was Won.” She also was an actor for Focal Theatre Lab — a theater collective that encourages conversation between aspiring storytellers and community members through readings of new plays.

Lazere chose Stewart to be her faculty escort because “he has really inspired and helped me explore how design can impact communities and how to create accessible art for everyone,” she said. “He has been incredibly encouraging as I created projects that combined theatre, digital video and animation design.”

After graduation from Iowa State, Lazere plans to pursue a position in development and post-production for television and film.

Lazere is the daughter of Michael Lazere and Lynn Anthony of Ames and a 2016 graduate of Ames High School.
