AMES, Iowa — Kaitlyn Sanchez, an Iowa State University senior in graphic design, is a recipient of the university’s 2020 George Washington Carver Outstanding Achievement Award.

To be eligible for the award, students must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and demonstrate community service and leadership experience, successful internships or cooperative education and conference participation. As a freshman, Sanchez served as a member of the George Washington Carver Advisory Board and participated in the ISU President’s Leadership Class. She worked as an Eaton Hall community advisor for three semesters in 2017-2018 and was elected the Student Government Senator for the College of Design in 2018.

Sanchez was a children’s ministry intern for First Baptist Church Maryville in Illinois last summer. She studied abroad with the College of Design Rome Program in fall 2019 and participated in the Venice Biennale. She took part in the Thomas L. Hill Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE) for three years and represented the university at the Design Education Summit in Savannah, Georgia, last May. She volunteered with Overflow Thrift Store, Food at First and Special Olympics, among other community service. She was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Graphic Design Social Club.

In recognition of her achievement, Sanchez will receive a letter from ISU President Wendy Wintersteen, a certificate from the George Washington Carver Academic Faculty Council and a green stole, as well as a notation on her academic transcript. After graduation, Sanchez will work as a freelance designer and plans to join a language-learning center in Costa Rica as its art director when global travel resumes.
