AMES, Iowa — The Iowa State University Design on Main Gallery, 203 Main St., will host a celebration of spring festivals, including Holi, Mardis Gras, May Day and more, from 6–8 p.m. Friday, April 5.

This family-friendly event and exhibition, the “Spring into Arts Festival,” will feature interactive projects, including make-your-own May Day treat baskets, a collaborative outdoor Holi piece and a community-crafted flower wall.

The work on display and made at the event will be visible through the next week during normal gallery hours: 2–5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and 2–7 p.m. Thursday.

  • Holi powder
Those who wish can step outside our main gallery area to create a Holi-inspired art piece. Using bottles of colored powder, participants will take turns “throwing” powder to create a community abstract art piece.
  • Flower wall
Participants are encouraged to bring magazines and other paper goods from spring cleaning to be recycled into beautiful flowers for an Instagram-worthy flower wall! With a few folds, participants’ flowers will create a community-grown “garden” in the Design on Main Gallery. Community members can see and add to the wall the next week during normal gallery hours, or see the progress under the hashtag #SpringIntoArts. Materials for this craft will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • May Day baskets
Make your own allergen-free treat basket to eat during the event or take home to someone special. Historically in some communities, hanging a May Day basket on someone’s door was a chance to express romantic interest. Participants can bring their own bin or basket, or small containers will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spring fashion launch

Following the event, Janae Smith, owner and designer of threadit in downtown Ames, will host the launch of her spring fashion line at 8 p.m. in the gallery. Models will be styled by We The Dreamers and Powder Studio and will be able to answer questions about the garments, which will be available in a silent auction.
