AMES, Iowa — Christiana Moss, managing principal of Studio Ma in Phoenix, Arizona, will give the morning keynote address at the 2018 AIA Iowa Convention Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.

Moss will present “Regenerative Environmental Design: Studio Ma” at 8:15 a.m. in the Lecture Hall. Sponsored by the Iowa State University Department of Architecture, her lecture also is part of the department’s 2018-2019 Public Programs Series, “Anonymity.”

Moss will share the firm’s latest work and its vision of regenerative environmental design, one that gives back more energy, water and resources than it uses. Through work inspired by nature and higher-performing sustainability goals, Moss will demonstrate that considering environmental concerns results in beautiful and practical buildings. She will present concepts for a new triple-net-zero (energy, water and waste) building designed for Arizona State University.

About the speaker

As Studio Ma’s managing partner, Moss is responsible for assisting clients with identifying project goals, facilitating decisions and leading the design team to realize successful buildings. She has worked on numerous educational, institutional and cultural program types for both small- and large-scale projects, including public-private partnerships with Princeton and Arizona State Universities.

Moss holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University. Prior to graduation, she joined the studio of Pritzker Architecture Prize-winner Sverre Fehn at the Oslo School of Architecture in Norway for a semester of study. Following graduation, she interned in the office of Simon Ungers in New York City, where she worked on the winning entry for the Berlin Holocaust Memorial. She then worked for the offices of McCoy and Simons Architects and Eddie Jones in Arizona until founding Studio Ma in 2003.

Moss is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the US Green Building Council and the Society of College and University Planners (SCUP). She served as conference chair of the SCUP 2016 Pacific Regional Conference.

Studio Ma’s approach embodies the concept of “Ma,” the space between, where context, natural and experiential space are considered as much as the making of beautiful, functional objects. The firm has received numerous honors, including recognition as an Architect 50 firm by Architect Magazine and as an Architectural Record Design Vanguard Firm.
