AMES, Iowa — Siouxland residents attending the Big Parade on Thursday, June 29, are invited to stop by Iowa State University Design West to learn more about a new program making it easier for area students to complete a bachelor’s degree at Iowa State.

A new agreement between the ISU College of Design and Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) allows students to take introductory design courses at the ISU Design West facility in Sioux City and fulfill general education requirements at WITCC before transferring to the Iowa State campus in Ames to pursue an art or design degree.

To celebrate and promote the new program, the ISU College of Design will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. June 29 at ISU Design West, 1014½ Design Place, just yards away from the Big Parade route along Fourth Street.

College representatives will greet visitors and answer questions about the Core Design Program @ ISU Design West collaboration with WITCC.  College of Design alumni who live and work in the area also will be on hand to share their experiences. Light refreshments will be served.

Core Design Courses

The ISU College of Design will begin offering its first-year Core Design Program courses at Design West in fall 2017. Some classes will be taught on site in Sioux City by Iowa State faculty members. Others will be offered remotely via asynchronous online learning.

Students who participate in the new transfer program can spend their freshman year in Siouxland and apply to the College of Design’s professional degree programs after a minimum of one year of coursework, or upon completion of an Associate in Arts (AA) in General Studies or AA in Art and Design at WITCC.

Participants will have a clearly defined plan that guides the first year, or the first two years of their undergraduate study if they choose to complete an AA degree at WITCC prior to transferring to Iowa State. This opportunity makes it easier for students to complete an Iowa State degree while minimizing the time required to be in Ames.

The transfer program is co-coordinated through the Northwest Iowa Regents Resource Center, which is a collaboration of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, and the two community colleges in northwest Iowa — Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon and WITCC.
