BNIM Regenerative Design Challenge: Co-Creating Communities of Climate Resilience

Jiwnath Ghimire, assistant professor, community and regional planning
Alenka Poplin, associate professor, community and regional planning
Andrea Wheeler, associate professor, architecture

College of Design faculty members who received a BNIM Regenerative Design Challenge grant in 2023 will discuss regenerative principles from the lens of community collaboration and engagement following disasters and shocks. With case studies from Wales, Slovenia and Nepal, their research reveals that informal and need-based collaboration is the strongest within a community during and after a crisis. Communities work together and stay together during crisis based on their common values and priorities. This project’s significant contribution is methodological, offering a regenerative resilience framework for community collaboration and engagement.

Part of the IDRO Friday Research Seminar brown-bag lunch series sponsored by the Institute for Design Research and Outreach in the College of Design.
