College of Design awards

The college and university believe in celebrating the accomplishments of our outstanding faculty and staff members, students and alumni. Below are nomination forms and deadlines for a variety of awards presented throughout the year. Administrators, faculty, staff and students may nominate colleagues, teachers and students for the following annual awards.

Purpose

To recognize the significance of advising as a service to students (undergraduate and graduate) and a key in student retention. To reward outstanding performance in advising students during their program of study, formally while serving as an academic advisor, and/or informally as a classroom or studio instructor.

Eligibility

The nominee must be a full time faculty member ISU College of Design faculty member or professional and scientific staff member who regularly instructs and/or advises undergraduate and/or graduate students, including student clubs. In addition, the nominee must have been an ISU CoD faculty/staff member for a minimum of 3 years. This award need not be given every year.

Purpose

To recognize and support sustained excellence in teaching in the College of Design and to acknowledge excellent teaching performance of a long-standing College of Design faculty member. Up to one award annually.

Eligibility

The nominee may be a tenured or term faculty member and must have been an ISU College of Design faculty member for a minimum 11 years at the beginning of the academic year in which the award is given. A faculty member and/or extension specialist must not have previously received this teaching award. This award need not be given every year.

Purpose

To recognize and support the significance of teaching in the College of Design and to acknowledge exceptional teaching performance of a College of Design faculty member early in their professional career.

Eligibility

The nominee may be a tenured, tenure-track, or term faculty member and must have been an ISU College of Design faculty member for a minimum of two years and no more than 10 years at the beginning of the academic year in which the award is given. Up to two awards may be given: 1) faculty on a term appointment, 2) faculty on a tenure-eligible/tenured appointment (eligibility determined by the appointment at the time of nomination). A faculty member and/or extension specialist must not have previously received this teaching award.

Purpose

To recognize College of Design faculty/staff who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishment in research and scholarship.

Criteria

Nominees must exhibit documents evidence of research and scholarly activity representing significant innovation or impact as evaluated by peers and experts in their field. Nominees should show evidence of impact in mentoring of students in research and scholarly pursuits.

Purpose

To recognize College of Design faculty/staff who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishment in outreach or public service activity.

Criteria

Nominees must exhibit documented evidence of outstanding accomplishment in outreach or public service activity representing significant innovation or impact as evaluated by peers and outreach/service recipients.

Purpose

To recognize a Professional and Scientific (P&S) staff member who has demonstrated exemplary performance while working at the College of Design; as demonstrated innovative, creative, or original ways to accomplish job responsibilities and effect positive change; established a pattern of responsibility in performing job duties; exhibited service to their department or unit and the College of Design; fosters a spirit of cooperation and strong interpersonal relationships with fellow employees; exhibits potential for future contributions to their department or unit, the College of Design, and/or their community.

Purpose

To recognize and support faculty who have shown outstanding achievement in one or more areas such as teaching and advising, research, creative activity, professional recognition and awards, outreach and/or service to the college, university, community and/or profession. Outstanding achievement as a criterium for this award is a specific and documented set of activities and/or accomplishments that a nominee does that are in addition to doing their job well. The outstanding achievement should be unique, require leadership skills, individual initiative, or surprising creativity that is beyond what is expected in a faculty member’s PRS. This award need not be given every year.

University Award Nominations

A number of prestigious awards for faculty, staff, students and alumni are presented by Iowa State University each year. Calls for nominations come from various units in the University and links can be found below. Please submit your nominations for university faculty and staff awards via email to Amy Bannister (amyb@iastate.edu) by 11:59 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, so the relevant college councils and committees will know who is being nominated and can provide support for your nomination(s). College deadlines are intentionally set earlier than the administering units’ deadlines to allow for internal review, ranking and recommendation.
