Shelby Doyle, assistant professor of architecture, and alumna Erin Hunt (BArch 2017 Architecture) won the 2019 Emerging Research Award: Project Category for “Melting” at the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture ACADIA 2019 conference in Austin, Texas. They also presented a paper on “Dissolvable 3D-Printed Formwork: Exploring Additive Manufacturing for Reinforced Concrete.” “Melting” is a series of prototypes exploring methods developed in prior research (detailed in their paper) to augment typical concrete construction methods with unique geometry that would be difficult to fabricate using other concrete formwork methods.
