“Overcoming design fixation in idea generation,” a paper by Seda McKilligan, an Iowa State University associate professor of industrial design, and her colleagues at the University of Limerick, Ireland, and the University Michigan, has been accepted by the Design Research Society international conference, DRS2018 Limerick. The paper explores the use of design heuristics, an empirically validated method for idea generation, to overcome fixation in a design education setting. This work is funded by the National Science Foundation TUES (Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM) Program.
