Sara Hamideh, an Iowa State University assistant professor of community and regional planning, has received a Rapid Response Research (RAPID) grant from the National Science Foundation to study the “Impacts, disruption and displacement after low-attention disasters: experiences of non-owner and immigrant households.” The grant will allow Hamideh to expand a pilot field study of recovery challenges faced by non-homeowner and immigrant households in Marshalltown, Iowa, after an EF-3 tornado damaged the community in summer 2018. She hopes this research can inform development of programs to address recovery needs resulting from social vulnerability and help recovery programs better communicate assistance eligibility to people displaced by disasters so they can access assistance.
