Sara Hamideh, an Iowa State University assistant professor of community and regional planning, received a quick response grant from the University of Colorado Boulder’s Natural Hazards Center for research into the impacts of the tornado that hit Marshalltown this past summer. She is working with an Iowa State team, including Ruben Hernandez, Jasmine Khammany and Emily Vanek from community and regional planning and Enrique Rubio-Delgao from civil engineering, to examine how the tornado affected housing and different types of households — particularly immigrant households and renters — in order to understand what can be done in the future to address disasters in the United States. The Marshalltown Times-Republican also ran a story about this research.
