“Evolution of Modeling for Lightweight Structures: Creating the Munich Olympic Stadium Roof (1967-72),” an article by Rob Whitehead, associate professor of architecture, has been published in the prestigious TAD (Technology, Architecture + Design) Journal, an international, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the advancement of scholarship in the field of building technology and its translation, integration and impact on architecture and design.

Part of Whitehead’s ongoing scholarship related to historic experimental structures and pre-computational structural design practices, this research was supported by a grant from the ISU Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities (CEAH) that allowed him to travel to Germany to visit the Frei Otto archives, the Institute for Lightweight Structures (ILEK) in Stuttgart and the stadium in Munich.
