Two entries by Miriam Martincic, assistant teaching professor of graphic design, were shortlisted for the Communication Arts 2020 Illustration Competition. They include “Author & Illustrator Portraits for ‘The Wreck of the Good Ship Lollipop'” in the Book category and “Swimmer & Runner at Rest” in the Unpublished category.
The author and illustrator portraits for The Wreck of the Good Ship Lollipop show the book’s collaborators at work in their respective creative environments. A shared framing device unites the separate yet entwined actions of writing and image-making. The client is Spineless Books.
“Swimmer & Runner at Rest” is a summertime diptych that pairs poolside and bedroom scenes. The swimmer and runner are at rest. Repeated shapes across panels tell a humorous secondary story. Everything is in its right place.
