Two variations of an illustration by Miriam Martincic, assistant teaching professor in graphic design, were published in the April 19 edition of The New York Times. They accompanied an article titled “To Tip, or Not to Tip?” on consumer confusion regarding automated tipping. The vertical variation was used on the cover of the paper’s food section while the horizontal variation was used inside.
