The new Iowa Correctional Institution for Women facility in Mitchellville includes extensive landscape enhancements designed and constructed in collaboration with the Iowa State University Department of Landscape Architecture. Over the past seven years, students in an interdisciplinary studio taught by ISU assistant professor Julie Stevens have created outdoor classrooms, produce gardens and a decompression area for prison staff, and most recently, a children’s garden where incarcerated women and their families can visit together outdoors. The new correctional facility and the landscape collaboration received a Platinum Award in Building Design + Construction’s 21st Annual Building Team Awards and are featured in the May 2018 issue of Building Design + Construction magazine.
