Douglas Spencer, associate professor and director of graduate education in the Iowa State University Department of Architecture, will participate in the 2021 Venice Architectural Biennale as part of the Austrian entry addressing “Platform Urbanism.” Spencer’s contribution, titled “Bearing Capital: Performance and Personification,” will explore how architecture provides a platform for the forms of presentation, conduct and personification requisite to public life in neoliberal capitalism. This exploration will initially take the form of a guest blog on the website for the Austrian pavilion Nov. 2–9, 2020, to be followed by a contribution to a book publication, an installation and a week-long residency by Spencer at the Biennale later in 2021.
