Lilah Mares – Transfer Student Spotlight

Name: Lilah Mares

Pronouns: She/her/hers

Major: Interior Design

Year: Junior, technically

Hometown: This is a hard question… I’m a military brat, so I’ve moved around a lot. I was born in Arizona but I consider my hometown to be Longmont, Colorado.

Transferred from: Arizona State University

Why did you choose Iowa State University?
I went through ASU’s core program and was rejected from interior design, which is what I really wanted to do. My best friend goes to school at Central College in Pella, Iowa, and when I was looking for new design programs to apply to, she basically was like “come to Iowa State!” and so that was a big incentive to be closer to her, coming from so far away. The design school here also has a pretty high ranking, which is a big draw in terms of hire-ability. And the fact that it’s a public university, too, and not like a small private college, so I wouldn’t be surrounded by just art and design people. I can get a lot of different perspectives of how real-life users would interact with the environment I’m making.

How is Iowa State different?
There’s some things I like a lot better about the Core Design Program here than ASU’s. I like the projects for 102 and that we have to take a drawing class. Not that I’m the best drawer, but I’m able to communicate my ideas a lot more efficiently than before this class. We also have more time for the projects here, and we’re able to go through and learn the entire design process from start to end which was super helpful. Also, this is a big generalization, but I feel like the people here are more family and community focused; at ASU the goal was getting a good job, here at ISU it’s like, I still want to get a good job, but I have more camaraderie with my fellow students and I’m building more relationships than I was at ASU. It’s a much more collaborative space.

What do you enjoy most about your major?
I like that it’s a pretty small community within the program. I know everyone in my classes and I’m not afraid to talk to them or ask them questions.

What is your favorite ISU tradition?
The one I follow the most is not stepping on the Zodiac!

What is your best memory so far at Iowa State?
Probably joining my sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, and walking into the house on preference night.

What advice would you give another student who is thinking of transferring to Iowa State?
Do it. The community here is so great and that makes the transition super easy. Everyone is easy to talk to. People in the Midwest care.
