Senior, Graphic Design
From: Ankeny, Iowa
Study abroad semester: Fall 2016 (August – December)
Location: College of Design Rome Program, Rome, Italy
Why did you decide to study abroad and how did you choose the location?
One of the reasons that I came to Iowa State was because of the Rome Program. I had known that I wanted to travel the world, and studying abroad was the perfect outlet. The Rome Program allowed me to stay on track earning the credits that I needed and still graduate on time.
What courses did you take in Rome?
I took the main senior graphic studio, advanced typography (an option studio), photography with an Italian professor, Italian language and an art history course.
What other activities did you participate in while studying abroad?
I mostly traveled whenever possible. I visited nine different countries and many different cities in Italy. I attended the real Oktoberfest in Munich, went caving in Budapest, visited family in Amsterdam, watched the sun set over the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland and spent my birthday in Brussels. Those are experiences that I’ll never forget.
Did anything surprise you about the experience?
I think what surprised me the most was that people in different countries are just like us. I always had this idea in my head that people from different cultures were very different than me. Meeting locals in their environment showed me that we are all human and made me excited to travel again.
What is the most important thing you learned?
The thing that will stick with me the most is that the world is big and life is short. It sounds like a cliché, but we are not required to work 40 hours a week at a desk — we have so many opportunities to see the world and now is the time to go! I already have a list of the next places I plan on visiting.
What advice would you give other students who are considering studying abroad?
If you have any desire at all, just do it. I’ve never met someone who regretted studying abroad.
