Peter Goché, an Iowa State University assistant professor of architecture, will receive two regional awards for his work from the American Institute of Architects Central States Chapter. Goché’s “Water Hutch” will receive an Excellence in Architectural Detail Merit Award and his “InsideOute” project will receive an Excellence in Architecture Merit Award at the AIA Nebraska / Central States Excellence in Design Gala Thursday, Oct. 5, at Gallery 1516 in Leavenworth, Neb.

Reminiscent of the many waterways that meander through the open flat of northeastern Iowa, “Water Hutch” is a sinuous line consisting of three oxbows constructed of white cedar. Conceived as a standalone sculpture or as part of a community of similar components arranged in a series that make up a larger installation, the work can be placed in various contexts. It has been exhibited in multiple regional contemporary art institutions. The initial work was acquired as reception area seating by Faegre Baker Daniels law firm in Des Moines, which also commissioned a second, similar installation.

“InsideOute” consists of an archive/open-air classroom at Black Contemporary, a defunct seed farm now used as a field station dedicated to the study of spatial phenomena and perception. The series of spaces (gallery, sky room and earth room) serve as a venue for seminars and workshops, using the archive of collected artifacts for experimental practices and performances.
