AMES, Iowa – Current and recent work by Iowa State University College of Design alumna Lydia Nong will be showcased in her first solo exhibition Nov. 1–27 at Mainframe Studios in Des Moines.
An opening reception for “Internal States” will be from 5–8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in conjunction with Mainframe’s monthly First Friday event and “Made at Mainframe!” November theme.
Nong, who received her bachelor of fine arts in integrated studio arts from Iowa State in 2023, completed a year-long residency at Mainframe Studios before renting her own studio space in the building. Co-sponsored by Mainframe and the ISU Department of Art and Visual Culture, the residency – which is open to recent graduates of the department’s degree programs – helped Nong establish herself as a practicing artist and connect with other Iowa creatives.
Since graduating, Nong’s artwork has been exhibited across Iowa – including Des Moines, Ames and Cedar Rapids – and internationally; she just returned from London, where her painting titled “Something About the Moon” was included in the “Dreams and Nightmares” exhibition at Boomer Gallery.
“I wouldn’t be where I am now in my career if it wasn’t for Iowa State University,” Nong said. “Being able to create and network at Mainframe has given me a solid foundation to continue my artistry and be confident in what I make.”
Internal States
Nong says her exhibition will invite viewers to explore “the strangeness of the human mind.” Her work delves into her vivid dreams; intrusive thoughts; and “complex and indescribable feelings.” She often uses the human form as a vehicle to communicate these metaphors.
“There is so much to be said in the way we conduct ourselves, and there is much to explore in terms of our way of thinking,” said Nong. “These pieces are showing a vulnerable side of me. I hope visitors enjoy them.”
