AMES, Iowa — The Iowa State University College of Design will celebrate its innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives through events on Friday, Feb. 24.

With a focus on social innovation and entrepreneurship, the college’s first Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I+E) Day will introduce a range of opportunities for students, staff, faculty and the public to engage with ways that artists, designers and planners examine and inform a culture of care: care for oneself, for the community and for the built and natural environments.

8:50 –9:40 a.m., 1210 LeBaron Hall

Culture of Care

In this presentation, College of Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez invites students in the first-year Core Design Program to participate in the college’s Care Initiative. Open to all.

Faculty teaching the Design Studies 102 studios in the Core this semester will lead students through a series of care-focused prompts in their courses the following week in collaboration with the college’s Innovation Fellows and Scholars. Students will then explore these prompts in teams as they begin to conceptualize their wearables projects.

The completed projects will be featured in the Wearables Design Show scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the College of Design.

12:10–1 p.m., 130 College of Design

College of Design I+E Cohort – Part II

In a special edition of the IDRO Friday Research Seminar Series hosted by the Institute for Design Research and Outreach, seven faculty who are part of the college’s inaugural Innovation and Entrepreneurship Cohort share their research, scholarship and work related to the Care Initiative. Open to all.

(College of Design I+E Cohort – Part I will be from 12:10–1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in 130 College of Design.)

Many of these activities offer opportunities for engagement with communities, organizations and locations throughout Iowa, the Midwest and the world.

Dream the Future II

The second in a series of student innovation workshops will kick off with an opening keynote by College of Design Innovation Fellows Tina Rice, assistant teaching professor of graphic design; Jen Hogan, director of international programs; and Roman Chikerinets, associate teaching professor of architecture. Open to all.

The student workshop will continue from 7–8 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Participants will work closely with faculty and staff mentors to explore social innovation through themes of care and generate ideas that will help shape the future of care in the College of Design.
