AMES, Iowa — Ames artist Catherine Reinhart will share work created during her Iowa State University Design on Main artist residency in an exhibition Jan. 14–Feb. 4 at the ISU Design on Main Gallery, 203 Main St. in downtown Ames.

“AiR: Catherine Reinhart” will feature works on paper, fiber installations, videos and sculptures Reinhart developed as the artist-in-residence and gallery manager from August 2017 through June 2019. These include works inspired by the spring 2018 Seminar in Fabricating Tools, Computation and Weaving taught by ISU faculty Shelby Doyle, assistant professor of architecture, and Olivia Valentine, assistant professor of art and visual culture; Reinhart’s fiber artist residency at the Arrowmont School for Arts and Crafts Pentaculum in January 2018; and her artist residency at the Cedar Point Biological station in Ogallala, Nebraska, in May 2018.

“My artistic process is iterative, and I work on several bodies of work at once. I dissemble, reconfigure and react to discarded polyester quilts. I layer topograpical maps, weaving drafts and recorded dat to discover the connections between disparate places,” Reinhart says in her artist’s statement.

“Recently, my socially engaged works rely on the communal actions of mending together. These shared experiences create unexpected ties and are powerful antidotes to an increasingly divided and alarmist culture. I am interested in a radical hospitality and a generous art practice which redeems the overlooked, cares for the forgotten and honors the undervalued.”

Reinhart received a bachelor of fine arts in integrated studio arts from Iowa State in 2008 and a master of fine arts in textiles from the University of Kansas in 2012. She exhibits her work locally and nationally and has received numerous grants and awards, including a personal development grant from the Surface Design Association in 2015 and Iowa Arts Council Art Project Grants in 2016 and 2020. Her work is a part of the Southern Graphics Council Print Collection and Archives and the Kyoto Seika University Print Department Permanent Collection.
