AMES, Iowa — Bethany Wilcoxon, AICP, senior advisor at McClure Engineering Company in Clive, is a recipient of the 2019 Design Achievement Award presented by the Iowa State University College of Design.

The award recognizes outstanding creative and professional achievements of alumni in all of the college’s disciplines, which include architecture, art and design, community and regional planning, graphic design, industrial design, integrated studio arts, integrated visual arts, interdisciplinary design, interior design, landscape architecture, sustainable environments and urban design.

Wilcoxon, originally from Atlantic and now of Des Moines, received a bachelor of science in community and regional planning in 2008 and a graduate certificate in geographic information systems in 2009 from Iowa State. She will be honored during Homecoming at the ISU Alumni Association’s 88th Honors and Awards Ceremony at 1:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in Benton Auditorium, Scheman Building, Iowa State Center. A dessert reception will follow.

As the senior advisor at McClure, Wilcoxon manages a multimillion-dollar beautification initiative for the Iowa Great Lakes and guides community development and corporate initiatives. She previously served as McClure’s vice principal of community planning, helping to build the placemaking team and working to revitalize small communities across the country.

Wilcoxon began her career with the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, where she led development of The Tomorrow Plan, a $3.1 million initiative to advance sustainability in Greater Des Moines. She then became director of Capital Crossroads, managing development of the next regional vision plan for Greater Des Moines and central Iowa before joining McClure in 2017.

Wilcoxon helped raise $10.3 million for the new Jester Park Nature Center and started the US Green Building Council’s ADVANCE program in Iowa, working to enhance equity in sustainability. She was invited to join the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Community — a grassroots network of young people addressing local, regional and global challenges — and develop Iowa’s first Global Shapers Hub in Des Moines.

Wilcoxon is an alumna of Leadership Iowa and the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute’s Community Leadership Program. She was named an Iowa STATEment Maker by the ISU Alumni Association in 2012, and a Business Record “Forty Under 40” and Royal Town Planning Institute International Award for Planning Excellence finalist in 2016.

She is a member of the Governor’s Empower Rural Iowa Initiative Growing Rural Iowa Task Force, Great Outdoors Foundation board and Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity Advocacy Committee. She is an annual member of the ISU Alumni Association.
