AMES, Iowa — An exhibition exploring comics and the interaction of words and images will be on display Nov. 19-30 at the Iowa State University College of Design.

Perception is Everything is the thesis exhibition of work by Dan Shea, graduate student in integrated visual arts from Marcus, who will receive a Master of Fine Arts from Iowa State in December. The show will feature several comic book pages Shea has produced along with process work and standalone illustrations in ink and charcoal.

For Shea, comics are the “perfect marriage of narrative and storytelling in both visual and literary forms.” He strives to combine skills in writing and drawing to tell his own stories — one of which he calls Perception is Everything.

“The main theme of the largest body of work centers on a fantastical view of what our brain is capable of perceiving as well as how we see the world around us in general, and the many possible realities which may lay beyond the veil of what we can see,” Shea said.

The exhibition will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays (except Nov. 22-23, when it will be closed for Thanksgiving) in room 181-1, first floor of the College of Design building on the west side of the ISU campus. A closing reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
