AMES, Iowa — Recent artwork by 18 faculty of the Iowa State University Department of Art and Visual Culture is on display Aug. 22 through Sept. 8 at the ISU Design on Main Gallery, 203 Main St. in downtown Ames.

“For the Common Good” features prints, paintings, photographs, illustrations, furniture, video, and fiber, metal and interactive works. The exhibition was inspired in part by an essay by Johnnella E. Butler, professor of comparative women’s studies and the former provost and vice president for academic affairs at Spelman College. In her essay, she notes that the arts can provide a space for thinking, dialogue and participation for the common good.

Gallery hours are 2-5 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and 2-7 p.m. Thursday.

A public reception will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, with a gallery talk by participating faculty from 7 to 8 p.m. A closing gallery talk will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8.
