AMES, Iowa — Angela Brooks, FAIA, the managing principal of Brooks + Scarpa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will give the morning keynote address at the Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Architects’ 2018 spring conference Wednesday, April 18, on the Iowa State University campus.

Brooks will present “Brooks + Scarpa: Places for People” at 9:15 a.m. in Benton Auditorium, Scheman Building, Iowa State Center. Sponsored by the ISU Department of Architecture, her lecture also is part of the department’s 2017-2018 Public Programs Series, “For Other Architectures.”

In her talk, Brooks will describe the work of Brooks + Scarpa, detailing her efforts to create beautiful and sustainable architecture for the advancement of better cities and more equitable societies. In 25 years of practice, the firm has competed nearly every project type, ranging from single-family homes to multi-family housing, affordable housing and commercial, institutional, educational and governmental buildings. By integrating state-of-the-art, eco-friendly design and science, their work is at the leading edge of sustainability best practices and innovation.

About the speaker

Brooks supervises all of Brooks + Scarpa’s office operations from schematic design through completion of construction and post-occupancy evaluation. A recognized leader in the field of environmental and sustainable design and construction, she is responsible for firm development in the area of housing and policy, leading the firm’s sustainability initiatives and overall management.

Brooks sees architecture as an instrument for the triple bottom line (social, environmental/ecological and financial performance) and the delivery vehicle for space that encourages occupants to flourish. She pursues this philosophy through two tracks: executing and enhancing individual structures while formulating and advancing ideas that promote larger societal wellbeing through policy organizations.

With her firm, Brooks has received numerous national AIA design awards, the 2010 AIA Architecture Firm Award and the 2014 Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum National Design Award. She is a fellow of the AIA and the 2018 chair of the national AIA COTE (Committee on the Environment) advisory group.
