AMES, Iowa — “On the Verge,” the 17th Annual International Postcard Print Exchange and Student Exhibition, is on display through Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Iowa State University College of Design.

Sponsored by the University Print Society, the show is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in Gallery 181, located on the first floor of the Design Building on the west side of the Iowa State campus.

This year’s exhibition features postcard prints by 289 artists from 26 U.S. states and eight other countries: Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, France, the Netherlands, South Korea and the United Kingdom.

Printmakers were invited to send 13 original, identical 4 x 6 prints in response to this year’s theme, “On the Verge.” Artists could interpret the theme in any way they wished. Methods used included any editionable printmaking technique (woodcuts, lithography, intaglio, relief, photography, silkscreen, digital printmaking, etc.). Prints were to be stamped and mailed separately as postcards so they would bear the markings of travel and the postal service.

Silent auction

Every artist who submitted prints received 12 different prints from other artists in return. The University Print Society kept one print from each artist for its own collection. These are the prints that are displayed as part of the show and available for bid in a silent auction.

Bidding starts at $5 per print. The auction ends at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16. Winners will be notified by email and arrangements will be made for them to pick up their prints next week. Proceeds help fund club events and student activities, including attendance at national printmaking conferences.

Student work

Seven College of Design students also have their work on display as part of a concurrent printmaking exhibition in the gallery. They include Maddie Fowler, junior in integrated studio arts and president of the University Print Society; Caleb Henkelman, senior in integrated studio arts; Paige Holzbauer, graduate student in integrated visual arts; Robert Jinkins, graduate student in integrated visual arts; Jordan Luckow, senior in integrated studio arts; Zena Olberding, senior in integrated studio arts; and AJ Zandt, graduate student in integrated visual arts.

Closing reception

A closing reception for both the postcard and student print exhibitions will be from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16. Light refreshments will be served.
