AMES, Iowa — Following a national search, Carl Rogers will become the next chair of the Iowa State University Department of Landscape Architecture.
Rogers, an associate professor of landscape architecture and director of the ISU Community Design Lab, has served as interim chair of the department since July 2016. His five-year, renewable appointment will begin July 1. He will continue to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in landscape architecture while overseeing the day-to-day operations of the department.
“Carl has proven himself an effective leader over the past 10 months. He has brought a level of energy and optimism to the department that I’m sure will fuel future innovative explorations in landscape architecture and design,” said College of Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez.
Rogers joined the Iowa State faculty in 2000 as a lecturer in landscape architecture. He moved into a tenure-track assistant professor position in 2003 and was promoted to associate professor in 2009. He has taught courses in site engineering, site design, ecological design, community design, landscape construction and professional practice.
Since 2011 he has served as director of the Community Design Lab, a collaboration between the College of Design and ISU Extension and Outreach housed at the ISU Research Park.
“It has been a privilege to serve the department as interim chair, and I’m grateful for the tremendous support I’ve received from students, faculty, alumni and practitioners during the search process,” Rogers said.
“I’m excited to continue working together to advocate for the profession of landscape architecture, to increase collaboration within the college and university and to enhance our connections with Iowa communities.”
Prior to joining ISU, Rogers had worked as a landscape architect for firms in Rhode Island and Iowa, including Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture, Des Moines, from 1998-2004.
Rogers received a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University, Manhattan, in 1993, and a Master of Landscape Architecture with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, in 1997. He is a licensed landscape architect in Iowa.
