AMES, Iowa — Michele Campagna, associate professor of spatial planning at the University of Cagliari, Italy, will speak at Iowa State University about how geodesign can impact communities and the fields of architecture and engineering.

His presentation, “Geodesign: A New Approach to Sustainable Planning and Design,” will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in room 0130 College of Design. Sponsored by the Department of Community and Regional Planning, the talk is free and open to the public.

Geodesign is an approach to design that contributes to the protection of natural and anthropic systems as well as supplies methods for community involvement and collaborative decision-making using state-of-the-art digital technologies, Campagna said. He will discuss recent advances in geodesign and share his experiences in geodesign research, education and practice. He will also provide examples of the application of geodesign methods and technologies, including Planning Support Systems (PSS).

About the speaker

Campagna teaches spatial planning, geodesign and geographic information science at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. In the past seven years he has coordinated the International Summer School on Scenario Analysis in Urban and Regional Planning, the International Summer School on ICT in Spatial Planning and two geodesign workshops in Brazil and Italy. In addition, he is the scientific coordinator of the UrbanGIS Lab, where researchers apply spatial information science methods and tools to spatial planning, environmental impact assessment and territorial governance. He has given seminars and taught courses at several universities in Brazil, Germany Italy, Portugal and Russia.

Campagna has published widely in major international journals, including The Planning Review, Journal of Digital Landscape Architecture, Brazilian Journal of Cartography and the Research in Urbanism Series, and is the author of a book on geoinformation technologies for spatial planning. His primary research interests include issues related to spatial planning, meta-planning, strategic environmental assessment, first- and second-generation PSS, social media and volunteered geographic information, and geodesign.
