Associate Professors John Cunnally and Michael Martin have earned the title of “senior faculty marshal” for their long service as faculty marshals at Iowa State University commencement ceremonies.

Cunnally joined the ISU faculty in the Department of Art and Design — now the Department of Art and Visual Culture — in 1989. He has served as a faculty marshal 33 times since fall 2004.

Martin (pictured in regalia) joined the ISU faculty in the Department of Landscape Architecture in 1995. He has served as a faculty marshal 28 times since the fall 2001 undergraduate commencement ceremony.

In addition to the “senior faculty marshal” title, each faculty member receives a personalized medallion including their name, credentials and first year of service engraved on the back. When they decide to “hang up their academic regalia” as faculty marshals, their last year of service also will be engraved on the back their medallion.

Cunnally and Martin will wear their senior faculty marshal medallions, which are inspired by the President’s Chain of Office and the University Mace, at future university commencement ceremonies.
