Hospitality Studio, Japan

The teams consisting of members from architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, and other art and design disciplines will collaborate to design a hotel within Shimane prefecture in rural Japan. The design teams will deal with community-specific issues such as the aging population, shortage of labor force, and rural tourism development.
Constructing a built environment requires the collaboration of various professionals and stakeholders. It is crucial to utilize diverse knowledge, skills, and frameworks to tackle complex issues. In this program, students will learn how to establish the fundamental concept behind a design and plan how it will be expressed physically and visually.
The interdisciplinary teams will design a 150- to 200-room hotel in rural Japan, promoting rural tourism and retreat to alleviate over-tourism in the major tourism centers. The project deliverables include research, ideation, business model study, plans, and presentations.
