A unique opportunity to explore the cutting-edge intersection of biology, design, material development, experimentation, and technology.

This course emphasizes creative problem-solving, critical thinking, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies. Students will have access to cutting-edge resources, expert mentorship, and a supportive learning environment that encourages bold, innovative thinking and practices. Students will participate in the 2025 Biodesign Challenge https://www.biodesignchallenge.org/ , and one ISU student team will have the chance to compete at the 2025 Summit in New York City.

Course objectives:

  • Explore Biotechnology Frontiers: Dive into the latest advancements in biotechnology, biomaterials, and their potential applications across various fields, materials science, and environmental sustainability.
  • Develop Interdisciplinary Skills: Collaborate with biologists, designers, and subject-matter experts to gain a holistic understanding of biodesign principles.
  • Create Visionary Projects: Work in interdisciplinary teams to conceptualize, design, and prototype novel designed solutions that address real-world challenges.
  • Engage with Global Perspectives: Connect with students and professionals from around the world, gaining insights into diverse approaches to biodesign.
  • Compete on an International Stage: Develop presentation skills as you prepare and compete to potentially showcase your project at the prestigious Biodesign Challenge Summit, held at the Museum of Modern Art and Parsons School of Design in New York City. One team from ISU will present at the Biodesign Challenge Summit in June 2025.
