To Serve Man: Nicole Soriano MFA Exhibition

April 2 @ 8:00 am - April 8 @ 5:00 pm

To Serve Man (an MFA Exhibition by Nicole Soriano)

Integrated visual arts graduate student Nicole Soriano will present the “To Serve Man” exhibition for her master of fine arts thesis. Her work will be on display Wednesday, April 2 through Tuesday, April 8, in Gallery 181 in the College of Design.

The exhibition will feature paintings, photography, film and digital collages that explore themes of feminist art and violence. Soriano shares her artwork aims to analyze the long history of fetishizing violence against women in art and media, from the Surrealist ideologies of Alberto Giacometti to the sexist portrayals in 20th-century advertisements. Since the early 1900s, women have been repeatedly subjected to degrading representations. Soriano’s work critically engages with and challenges patriarchy by subverting these portrayals. By intentionally placing women under the male gaze or in traditional roles like the kitchen, I use extreme satire to flip misogynistic narratives and give women power over them. Damsels in distress transform into women seeking revenge and enacting violence on men, but only within a fictional world that allows it.

A reception will be held from 5:30–7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3.
