GIS Seminar: Examining climate vulnerability to flooding and landslides: A spatial analysis of a Brazilian metropolitan region

April 28 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Presenter: Natalia Nery de Farias, Community and Regional Planning, GIS Certificate Candidate

Advisor: Dr. Monica Haddad

ABSTRACT:  This study examines the spatial pattern of climate vulnerability to flooding and landslides in the conurbation of the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region (BHMR), in Brazil. Using a Climate Vulnerability Index (CVI) based on the exposure-sensitivity framework, the present study includes biophysical characteristics of the area and socio-economic indicators to identify areas of high vulnerability. The analysis reveals that the northern and southwestern portions of the BHMR are the most vulnerable to flooding and landslides due to higher exposure and sensitivity. Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis techniques confirm strong positive spatial autocorrelation in CVI values, indicating clustering patterns of high and low vulnerability. The study highlights the need for targeted adaptation strategies and intergovernmental collaboration to lower the adverse impacts of flooding and landslides on vulnerable populations.

The seminar starts promptly at 12:05 p.m. and ends at 12:55 p.m. The GIS Seminar @ ISU is open to the public. If you are interested in attending, the location is Design 362.
