The Affordable Path to Net Zero: The PHIUS and Suite of Passive Building Certifications

October 14, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm CDT

Event Navigation

The nonprofit Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) is the leading passive building certification, training and research organization in North America. It has developed climate-specific passive building standards and a suite of building certifications — including PHIUS+ Core, PHIUS+2018 and PHIUS+ Source Zero —  to facilitate and pave the path to net zero for the construction industry.
The PHIUS+2018 Passive Building Standard represents the most recent evolution in passive building design standards. It puts projects on an efficient and affordable glide path to zero. The new standard’s overall energy-reduction targets are now aligned with the Architecture 2030 challenge goals of carbon reduction for the built environment to stabilize the climate. In her lecture, Katrin Klingenberg, executive director of PHIUS, will discuss the underlying passive building science principles, how the energy targets were developed and the specifics of the different PHIUS+ Building certifications.
A licensed architect in Germany, Klingenberg has worked for ahn and SCB in Chicago. In 2003, she designed and completed the first home to meet passive house standards in the United States. She has designed and consulted on numerous passive building projects across North America’s varied climate zones since. In 2007 she co-founded the Passive House Institute US, shifting the focus of her work toward research and education. Klingenberg has presented nationally and internationally on the topic of passive building science.
Klingenberg’s lecture is supported by Shive-Hattery Architecture + Engineering.
