Formworks: Parts and Pieces
Opening Reception of Exhibition (Mainframe Studios, 4th floor):
Formworks: Parts & Pieces
Drawing has long had a speculative, even at times disruptive, agency in architecture. One may draw structures impossible to build, spaces that defy form, images of utopias or dystopias that critique not only the discipline but also the cultures they reflect. In Formworks, a seminar this spring at the Department of Architecture at Iowa State University, students approached fabrication in the same speculative mode. Rather than models or mock-ups, participants in this seminar were asked to fabricate a series of autonomous constructions that interrogate the values embedded in how we build. The primary means of fabrication explored was casting. These castings were accompanied by discussions of texts on architectural detailing and craft, as well as of works by various artists and architects. Over the course of the semester, each seminar participant developed a body of work in response to this context. The exhibition at Mainframe Studios features these self-directed projects, and will run from May 1-9, 2019, with an opening reception 5-8 p.m., Friday, May 3.
