DATUM is a journal of architecture founded and edited by design students at Iowa State University. The publication seeks to manifest and catalogue DATUM’s community of discussion and act as a platform for further inquiry and critique. It is organized around a central theme that DATUM feels has been misrepresented, neglected, or needs further examination in the architectural discourse of the Midwest.
In conceding “we’re doomed”, the intention is not for designers, artists and architects to be lethargic – it is intended to change to outrage, alter our approach, and to design unhinged from an ecocidal state-power. In order to do this, this issue will dialogue with green radical philosophy, environmental and agricultural science, and critical studies on race, migration and colonialism. Datum No. 11 seeks to look inward in order to understand the condition of designing as a student-before-climate-change and the unique nostalgia designers experience for the lost futures we are tasked to design. We also must understand the severity of the conditions we begin to design within – exploring scientific adjacent to social realm to critique existing long-term (non)solutions to a world coming to an End.
