It Depends on the Lens: Addressing Unconscious Bias in the Faculty Search
ISU ADVANCE and the Cornell Interactive Theatre Ensemble (CITE) will host a workshop on unconscious bias in faculty searches.
In this interactive workshop designed for department chairs, faculty and search committee members, participants watch a filmed scenario of a search committee meeting, as five search team members begin to articulate their opinions about candidates for a short list. Following the scenario, participants have an opportunity to ask one of the characters questions about the meeting. The CITE facilitator conducts a guided discussion of the participants’ responses to the scenario and the characters. This discussion is followed by a research talk on unconscious bias, describing the studies used to develop the interactions depicted in the scenario. The session concludes with a discussion of best practices for addressing unconscious bias in searches.
Participants may choose the morning (9-11 a.m.) or afternoon (1-3 p.m.) session. Pre-registration is required via Learn@ISU (read instructions for how to register) by Thursday, Oct. 12, and will be closed when program capacity is reached, so register soon! The program is co-sponsored by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences ADVANCE; Colleges of Business, Design, Engineering, Human Sciences, Liberal Arts and Sciences and Veterinary Medicine; University Library, Office of the Vice President and Provost, Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion and Department of Psychology.
