AIA National/AIA Iowa Diversity Scholarship

Description

The Iowa Chapter AIA and the National AIA have joined together to provide financial assistance to architecture students.

Open to students who have completed their Core year and have been accepted into the undergraduate architecture professional program or who are currently enrolled in the undergraduate architecture professional program. The recipient is to be in good academic standing and a U.S. citizen.  Preference is given to applicants belonging to an under-represented U.S. ethnic group and to applicants who are residents of Iowa.  Applicants must be an AIA Iowa Student Affiliate Member - contact the AIA Iowa Chapter for information and instructions on registering.

Art and Design Excellence Scholarships

Description

Awarded to freshmen, sophomore, junior or senior student(s) who has (have) been in the Departments of Art & Visual Culture, Graphic Design, or Interior Design for at least one semester and making satisfactory progress towards a degree and must have 1 semester left in course work. Minimum GPA 3.0. This scholarship includes the Benbrook-Lapp and the Peterson-Anderson. Students will be considered for all which they are eligible. Selection is made by the scholarship and awards committee in the art and visual culture, graphic design, and interior design departments.  Students selected to receive this scholarship will be expected to write a one-page thank you letter to the scholarship's donor(s). This scholarship is for Fall 2018 - Spring 2019.

Scholarship applications and recommendation forms are due no later than Thursday, February 22, 2018.

AUID Scholarship

Description

The Association of University Interior Designers (AUID) offers up to three $1,000 scholarships annually. An applicant must be a junior or senior undergraduate student, enrolled full time in an AUID member university's interior design program by the end of spring term. (Students who will have just graduated by the May 31 deadline are eligible to apply.) If there is not an AUID member at your institution but you are interning with an AUID member from another institution, you may apply. Previous winners of the AUID scholarship cannot re-apply for two years after their initial award.  Past winners can be viewed at www.auid.org

Applicants must submit ALL of the following to the scholarship chairperson for their application to be considered. Applications that are missing any of these documents will not be considered.

  1. A cover letter introducing yourself and how you learned of the AUID organization.
  2. A typed application form or resume--listing work experience, honors/awards, extracurricular activities, organization memberships and positions held, and any other pertinent information.
  3. A 500-word essay/personal statement detailing your aspirations and goals for your design degree.
  4. A letter of recommendation from either a present or former employer, a design professional or a professor having direct knowledge of your academic and work performance within your degree program. The recommendation letter must also be received by May 31.
  5. Verification of your undergraduate enrollment with an official transcript.

Selection criteria include essay review by scholarship committee members; academic achievement; extracurricular and community service activities; honors and awards received while enrolled in college; letter of recommendation.

Barbara King Landscape Architecture Scholarship for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

This $1000 scholarship is awarded in memory of Charlie Cutler.  Charlie graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor's of Architecture in 2013.  The scholarship will be given to an undergraduate architecture student with demonstrated financial need participating in an international study abroad opportunity.

Preference shall be given to students who have demonstrated leadership as evidenced by participation in extracurricular or community organizations and activities as determined by the administering authority.   • Have earned an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited community college in Iowa 
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Have demonstrated financial need (FAFSA must be on file with ISU)
  • Write a 500-word essay addressing the following:
    • Individual determination to succeed
    • Motivation to earn a four-year university degree
    • Future goals and plan to achieve them

Initial Selection
Based upon a review of the application information, the award(s) will be made by the Design Ambassadors Club and the College of Design Honors and Award Board. The primary criterion will be portfolio strenght based upon images posted to social media with the College tagged in the posts. The recipients will be those who best combine evidence of high artistic ability and academic excellence.

  2. be identified as African American, Hispanic or Native American as permitted by federal and state law and university policy.
  3. have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  4. have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Preference shall be given to students who are involved in student organizations or the activities of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.

Diane Engh Anderson Interior Design Scholarship

Description

The Diane Engh Anderson Scholarship is from a 1971 graduate of the Applied Art-Interior Design program at Iowa State University.  Mrs. Anderson spent several years in retail interior design  and providing interior design consultant in Chicago and the State of South Dakota. 

Criteria for this scholarship is recipient shall be enrolled in the Department of Interior Design at Iowa State University; minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and citizens of the United States. Recipient shall have demonstrated leadership as evidence by participation in extracurricular or community organizations and activities (resume must be provided).

Scholarship is for one year and may not be renewed.   This award shall be made available to students of junior or senior class standing.

The Dorothy Maitland Miller Annual Scholarship is open to any undergraduate student who the meets the following criteria:  entering their sophomore, junior or senior class standing for the academic year of 2018-19; student shall be majoring in graphic design in the Department of Graphic Design; shall have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; shall be a resident of the State of Iowa; and preference shall be given to applicant who have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid.  This award shall be for one (1) year and may not be renewed.

Dorothy Maitland Miller is a 1952 graduate of Applied Art and started her career at Hallmark in Kansas City.  She returned to Iowa in 1954 to accept a position with Meredith Corporation and worked in the art department of their flagship publication "Better Homes and Gardens" for the rest of her career. Dorothy grew up in Ames and her father, an emigrant from Scotland, taught in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University.

This will be a 3-year scholarship awarded to an incoming graphic design student (sophomore class standing) for the 2018-19 academic year.  Requirements to apply are: accepted into the graphic design major in the Graphic Design Department; minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, a resident of the State of Iowa as permitted by Federal and State law, and University policy; and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

The scholarship will be applied to the recipient's Iowa State University in-state tuition.  The award is renewable each year for a total of 3 years in the program, if a minimum 3.0 GPA is maintained and the student stays in the graphic design program.  

The Graphic Design Department faculty will make the award selection.  Prior to the scholarship being awarded to the recipient's in-state tuition (U-Bill), the recipient is required to write a one-page thank you letter to the Donor's family.

Dr. Riad Mahayni Civic Planning Award

This scholarship has been made availalbe to MCRP students in order to honor the career of Professor Emeritus, Dr. Riad Mahayni at Iowa State University. In 1978 Dr. Mahayni accepted an appointment as Chair of the Department of Community and Regional Planning in the newly formed College of Design. The department earned recognition and accreditation of its undergraduate and graduate programs by the Planning Accreditation Board, and developed double degree programs with the assistance of Dr. Mahayni along with several other departments within the college and university. In 1983, a professional assignment took Dr. Mahayni to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holy city of Islam, serving as the technical coordinator for a major regional planning project. In 1986 after completing the Mecca project, he returned to Ames, Iowa and Iowa State University as a planning professor, teaching courses on planning in developing nations as well as transportation planning, planning theory and methods, land use, and comprehensive planning.

He was the Chair of the Department of Community and Regional Planning a second time from 1995 to 2002. During his tenure, the department maintained its active research agenda, including a multi-year project to establish a Community Outreach Partnership Center in the
Enterprise Community of Des Moines, Iowa funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. For his professional contributions and exemplary teaching and mentoring of students, Dr. Mahayni was elected as the first Iowan in the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Preferences will be given to someone interested in the city design market areas in using the internship experience to achieve maximum personal development. The student selected should show active and serious interest in Interior Design and future potential for professional achievement in this field. The Michelle Renee Pinkston Graphic Design Scholarship is available for students who are currently enrolled in the Graphic Design Department with a sophomore class standing.  This scholarship is for one year only and the award will be applied towards the student's ISU tuition bill.  Michelle Pinkston was a student at Iowa State University.

The Landscape Architecture Department provides financial assistance of up to $900 to MLA Graduate students.  Amount and number of awards vary based upon available funds.

Open to graduate students who travel to:

  • present papers and posters or participate in panel discussions in professional and academic conferences and symposia,
  • receive awards for academic work in professional conferences and events,
  • conduct research or training workshops directly related to creative component or thesis-during the 3rd year. *Does not include travel to the thesis case-study or project site.

Application Instructions

Apply by writing a letter addressed to the MLA Director of Graduate Education, Dr. Mira Engler. Specify the research/work involved; purpose of the travel; and travel destination. Add a second page with amount requested and a detailed budget of travel-related expenses, including transport, accommodations, and event fees.

 The application will be reviewed by the MLA committee. Decisions will be made within 4-5 weeks following the applications. Reimbursements will occur following the travel and upon submission of receipts.

Richard Rodine graduated from Iowa State University in 1973 with a major in Urban Planning. The academic preparation and leadership opportunities gained at Iowa State University resulted in a very successful and fulfilling career, including a 30 year career at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), where he reached executive ranks by the time he was 40. After retiring from the FAA in 2006, Richard accepted the position of Executive Vice President of ISG in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (a consulting and services firm providing support to the federal government). His leadership helped grow the company from 10 employees to over 225 employees, earning the firm numerous recognitions within the state and nationally as one of the fastest growing small businesses.

International travel in Richard's professional and personal life significantly and broadened his understanding of the value of knowing other cultures and people and that while we have differences, we also have many similarities. In our professional lives we have much that we can learn from others and much that we can share.

The Wendy Marie Noteboom Ewell Scholarship has been established at Iowa State University for the benefit of qualifying art students. Wendy, age 30, died on July 8, 2005. She graduated from Iowa State in 1998 with a degree in biomedical illustration, studied at the Art Students League in New York City, and went on to establish a career as a successful painter. She exhibited her paintings widely throughout New York, Tucson, Ariz., and Michigan, receiving numerous awards and honors including a Special Opportunity Stipend from the New York Foundation for the Arts.  Her exquisite paintings can be enjoyed on her website at www.wendyewell.com.  

Criteria:  A $1,000 awarded to a student who will be a junior or senior in the Fall of 2018 abd enrolled in art courses through the Department of Art and Visual Culture with preference given to female students studying in the fine arts.  Recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0.  Selection will be made by the faculty in the Department of Art and Visual Culture.
