Fall 2021 Graduation Convocation

The College of Design’s Fall 2021 Undergraduate and Graduate Convocation will be Friday, Dec. 17. This is a separate event from the official Iowa State University commencement ceremonies. This event includes bachelor’s and master’s students only from the College of Design and allows graduating students and their guests a more individualized celebration of their achievement.

Diploma covers are not presented at this event — that is part of the university commencement ceremonies.

The convocation begins with a reception for graduating students and their families in the Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum (atrium) at 3 p.m., followed by a recognition ceremony at 5 p.m. in Kocimski Auditorium, 0101 Design.

Candidates for graduation are asked to RSVP online so we will know how many students plan to attend. Please go to AccessPlus and under Student, click on the Graduation tab on the side of the page (the link is active until Tuesday, Dec. 14).

Students participating in the College of Design convocation are asked to wear business professional attire. Graduation gowns and caps may be worn at the college ceremony, but this is optional. Academic regalia (caps and gowns) must be worn at the university ceremonies.

Parking restrictions will not be enforced during convocation. You are welcome to park where available in general staff lots 6, 9 and 10, marked with yellow signs, near the College of Design’s King Pavilion.

On Dec. 17, students should check in at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the convocation ceremony.  A check-in station will be clearly identified when you arrive in the foyer. We request all graduates report to the southwest end of the atrium for individual photos at 4:30 p.m. followed by a group photo at 4:40 p.m. Graduating students will then be directed to a designated area to line up by department for the procession into the auditorium at 4:50 p.m. Families and guests may find their seats at that time.

Procession & Ceremony

Participating students will process together down the stairs in the auditorium and will be seated as a group. When your name is called, you will walk across the front of the auditorium and be congratulated by college faculty and administrators, then return to your seat until the ceremony ends.

Flash Photography will take professional photos before the ceremony. You will receive proofs, both in the mail and electronically, at the addresses you provide when you RSVP for the convocation. If you are interested in ordering photos, instructions to do so will be included with the proofs. Families may take pictures as their student walks across the front of the auditorium, and there will be an opportunity for additional photos after the ceremony.

For those who are unable to celebrate with us in person, the convocation will be livestreamed on the college’s YouTube channel.

If you have any questions regarding the college convocation, please contact Saylor Upah, event planner and alumni relations coordinator, 515-294-5791,

We look forward to recognizing the accomplishments of all our graduates and to wishing you a personal farewell!
