Description

The Iowa Chapter AIA and the National AIA have joined together to provide financial assistance to architecture students.

$500 - $1000 scholarship.  Amount and number of awards vary based upon available funds.

Open to students who have completed their Core year and have been accepted into the undergraduate architecture professional program or who are currently enrolled in the undergraduate architecture professional program. The recipient is to be in good academic standing and a U.S. citizen.  Preference is given to applicants belonging to an under-represented U.S. ethnic group and to applicants who are residents of Iowa.  Applicants must be an AIA Iowa Student Affiliate Member - contact the AIA Iowa Chapter for information and instructions on registering.

AUID Scholarship

Description

The Association of University Interior Designers (AUID) offers up to three $1,000 scholarships annually. An applicant must be a junior or senior undergraduate student, enrolled full time in an AUID member university's interior design program by the end of spring term. (Students who will have just graduated by the May 31 deadline are eligible to apply.) If there is not an AUID member at your institution but you are interning with an AUID member from another institution, you may apply. Previous winners of the AUID scholarship cannot re-apply for two years after their initial award.  Past winners can be viewed at www.auid.org

Applicants must submit ALL of the following to the scholarship chairperson for their application to be considered. Applications that are missing any of these documents will not be considered.

  1. A cover letter introducing yourself and how you learned of the AUID organization.
  2. A typed application form or resume--listing work experience, honors/awards, extracurricular activities, organization memberships and positions held, and any other pertinent information.
  3. A 500-word essay/personal statement detailing your aspirations and goals for your design degree.
  4. A letter of recommendation from either a present or former employer, a design professional or a professor having direct knowledge of your academic and work performance within your degree program. The recommendation letter must also be received by May 31.
  5. Verification of your undergraduate enrollment with an official transcript.

Selection criteria include essay review by scholarship committee members; academic achievement; extracurricular and community service activities; honors and awards received while enrolled in college; letter of recommendation.

Barbara King Landscape Architecture Scholarship for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Description

Up to eight $2,500 scholarships awarded annually to 4th-year and 5th-year undergraduate students and graduate students enrolled in the Landscape Architecture curriculum at Iowa State University. Preference given to undergraduates, women and demonstrated financial need. No student may qualify for more than one BKLA Scholarship during undergraduate or graduate study at ISU. (A BLA/MLA student may qualify for one scholarship in each program.) Minimum 2.5 GPA and 2.75 LA GPA. Projects should have a social or ecological advocacy focus. Carolyn Schnoor Whitaker Scholarship

Description

This scholarship is available to students with graduate class standing enrolled in the Department of Art and Visual Culture's Integrated Visual Arts MFA curriculum. Students selected to receive this scholarship will be expected to write a one-page thank you letter to the scholarship's donor.

This scholarship is a nonrenewable award given to undergraduate community college transfer students entering the College of Design and who hold an Associate of Arts degree.

  • Have earned an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited community college in Iowa

Description

The Design Ambassadors Club scholarship is a nonrenewable $1,000 portfolio-based award given annually to an undergraduate student entering the College of Design. Amount and number of awards vary based upon available funds.

Eligibility
Any graduating high school senior who has applied for admission and been accepted to Iowa State University and plans to enter any of the programs in the College of Design may be considered for the award(s).

Initial Selection
Based upon a review of the application information, the award(s) will be made by the Design Ambassadors Club and the College of Design Student Honors and Awards Committee. The primary criterion will be portfolio strength based on images posted to social media with the college tagged in the posts. The recipients will be those who best combine evidence of high artistic ability and academic excellence.

Diane Cone Boody Fine Arts Scholarship

Dorothy Maitland Miller Annual Scholarship

The Dorothy Maitland Miller Annual Scholarship is open to any undergraduate student who the meets the following criteria:  entering their sophomore, junior or senior class standing for the academic year of 2018-19; student shall be majoring in graphic design in the Department of Graphic Design; shall have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; shall be a resident of the State of Iowa; and preference shall be given to applicant who have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid.  This award shall be for one (1) year and may not be renewed.  

Dorothy Maitland Miller is a 1952 graduate of Aplied Art and started her career at Hallmark in Kansas City.  She returned to Iowa in 1954 to accept a position with Meredith Corporation and worked in the art department of their flagship publication "Better Homes and Gardens" for the rest of her career.  Dorothy grew up in Ames and her father, an emigrant from Scotland, taught in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University.

The scholarship award will be applied to the student's in-state tuition for the academic year, 2018-2019.  Selection shall be made by the Graphic Design Department faculty.

The recipient will be required to write a one-page thank you letter to the Donor's family prior to the scholarship award being applied to the student's in-state tuition.

Dr. Riad Mahayni Civic Planning Award

Description

This scholarship has been made available to MCRP students in order to honor the career of Professor Emeritus, Dr. Riad Mahayni at Iowa State University. In 1978 Dr. Mahayni accepted an appointment as Chair of the Department of Community and Regional Planning in the newly formed College of Design. The department earned recognition and accreditation of its undergraduate and graduate programs by the Planning Accreditation Board, and developed double degree programs with the assistance of Dr. Mahayni along with several other departments within the college and university. In 1983, a professional assignment took Dr. Mahayni to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holy city of Islam, serving as the technical coordinator for a major regional planning project. In 1986 after completing the Mecca project, he returned to Ames, Iowa and Iowa State University as a planning professor, teaching courses on planning in developing nations as well as transportation planning, planning theory and methods, land use, and comprehensive planning.

He was the Chair of the Department of Community and Regional Planning a second time from 1995 to 2002. During his tenure, the department maintained its active research agenda, including a multi-year project to establish a Community Outreach Partnership Center in the
Enterprise Community of Des Moines, Iowa funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. For his professional contributions and exemplary teaching and mentoring of students, Dr. Mahayni was elected as the first Iowan in the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Application Instructions

Students applying should be enrolled in the Department of Community and Regional Planning Master's program and collecting data for their graduate thesis and have demonstrated interest in civic engagement through volunteer, professional and/or academic experiences.  

Preference shall be given to students participating in an international travel experience to collect data for their graduate thesis.

EDSA Minority Scholarship

The EDSA Minority Scholarship was established to help African American, Hispanic, Native American and minority students of other cultural and ethnic backgrounds continue their landscape architecture education as they enter into their final two years of undergraduate study.   It is endowed through the Landscape Architecture Foundation.  The amount is $5,000 and the application deadline is February 15th.

Awarded to a full-time junior or senior student in interior design for summer internship expenses. Student receiving the scholarship must be completing their internship during the forthcoming summer and must show financial need.  Selection is made by the interior design faculty. Preferences will be given to someone interested in the city design market areas in using the internship experience to achieve maximum personal development. The student selected should show active and serious interest in Interior Design and future potential for professional achievement in this field. Student(s) selected to receive this scholarship will be requested to write a one-page thank you letter to the scholarship's donor(s).

MLA Travel Research Scholarship

Description

The Landscape Architecture Department provides financial assistance of up to $900 to MLA Graduate students.  Amount and number of awards vary based upon available funds.

Open to graduate students who travel to:

  • present papers and posters or participate in panel discussions in professional and academic conferences and symposia,
  • receive awards for academic work in professional conferences and events,
  • conduct research or training workshops directly related to creative component or thesis-during the 3rd year. *Does not include travel to the thesis case-study or project site.

Application Instructions

Apply by writing a letter addressed to the MLA Director of Graduate Education, Dr. Mira Engler. Specify the research/work involved; purpose of the travel; and travel destination. Add a second page with amount requested and a detailed budget of travel-related expenses, including transport, accommodations, and event fees.

Application materials can be submitted to Linda Galvin, Department of Landscape Architecture, Room 146 College of Design.

 The application will be reviewed by the MLA committee. Decisions will be made within 4-5 weeks following the applications. Reimbursements will occur following the travel and upon submission of receipts.

Property Rights Research Scholarship

Description

Scholarship awarded to a graduate student in their final year of study pursuing a master's degree in Community and Regional Planning or a master's degree in Landscape Architecture.

Richard L. Rodine Community & Regional Planning Study Abroad Scholarship

Description

Richard Rodine graduated from Iowa State University in 1973 with a major in Urban Planning. The academic preparation and leadership opportunities gained at Iowa State University resulted in a very successful and fulfilling career, including a 30 year career at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), where he reached executive ranks by the time he was 40. After retiring from the FAA in 2006, Richard accepted the position of Executive Vice President of ISG in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (a consulting and services firm providing support to the federal government). His leadership helped grow the company from 10 employees to over 225 employees, earning the firm numerous recognitions within the state and nationally as one of the fastest growing small businesses.

International travel in Richard's professional and personal life significantly and broadened his understanding of the value of knowing other cultures and people and that while we have differences, we also have many similarities. In our professional lives we have much that we can learn from others and much that we can share.
