Career Services

For Faculty and Staff

Design Career Fairs

Design Career Services coordinates in-person and virtual career fairs. A large fair held each spring semester typically hosts 250+ contacts representing 100+ firms and organizations. We typically welcome more than 100 alumni back to campus as firm representatives. Please encourage students to participate, and please consider stopping by to greet our alumni. A reception with firm representatives is held following in-person fairs, and faculty and staff are welcome.

We also offer College of Design virtual fairs, a Big 12 virtual career fair, and there are opportunities for design students at most ISU career fairs hosted by other colleges.

CyHire

To help meet our legal and ethical responsibilities and to maintain a fair and equitable recruiting process, CyHire is designated as the job and internship posting site for all students at Iowa State University. Employer instructions can be found here and all requests to post or relay opportunities should be forwarded to Design Career Services. Use of CyHire also ensures employers using university resources to recruit are committed to following Iowa State University’s Discrimination and Harassment Policy.

Legal and Ethical Issues in Recruiting

Faculty and staff sometimes receive employment opportunity information and are asked to relay the information to students or identify candidates. Requests for student referrals or for names of excellent students may seem harmless, but there are potential legal and ethical pitfalls. For more information, please read A Faculty Guide to Ethical and Legal Standards in Student Hiring and Tips for Providing References, published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

Reporting Discrimination or Harassment

Faculty and staff are “Responsible Employees” and obligated to report concerns to ISU’s Office of Equal Opportunity. This includes conduct by employers engaged in recruiting and issues that occur during internships.

Class Presentations

Design Career Services staff are happy to present in classes and for student organizations affiliated with the college. Presentation topics include: Overview of Career Services Resources, Professional Communication and Application Materials, Job and Internship Searches, Understanding and Negotiating Job Offers, Preparing for Career Fairs, and Interview Preparation. Please email Tiffany Atilano to schedule, and please feel free to propose a topic that isn’t listed.
