“Innovative solutions through innovated problems,” an article by Seda McKilligan, an Iowa State University associate professor of industrial design, and her colleagues at the University of Michigan, has been accepted for publication by the International Journal of Engineering Education. The article reports on two empirical studies providing evidence about how stated problems are altered within successful solutions in open design challenges, along with evidence of talk-aloud protocols. The qualitative analysis revealed systematic patterns presenting common practices in exploring the problem space.
