Structures by Design: Thinking, Making, Breaking (Routledge, 2019) by Rob Whitehead, associate professor of architecture, received a national 2021 Textbook Excellence Award from the Textbook and Academic Authors Association. Of the eight college textbooks honored, Whitehead’s is the only one related to physical sciences. Awardees will be recognized during an online awards ceremony at noon CDT Friday, March 19.

Structures by Design is an innovative and abundantly illustrated book packed with interactive exercises and informative diagrams. It is a book that will likely traverse conventionally siloed aspects of architecture curricula, finding its way into structures courses as well as design studios,” said the judges in their comments. “The author uses easy-to-understand and appropriate examples, starting with the simple and building to the complex, to walk the reader through the world of structural engineering.”
